It’s 80% food. Yes, you read right. If you are looking to shed a pound or two, exercise alone won’t do it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the two go hand in hand and what you eat is ridiculously important.

You could even double the amount of exercise that you are doing in the hope of adding a bit more to that 20% but it would be a waste of time, in fact it would probably have the reverse effect.

It’s safe to say that if you are on a health kick, your energy and focus should be on what you put in your mouth. Oh and don’t hang up your P.E. kit either, you still have to exercise, we just don’t want you to be under any illusion about the importance of the food part.

If you’re not sure where to start with the food part, try the following:

1Keep a food diary for a week of everything that passes your lips – this will help you see where you can make adjustments.

2Eat real food – the less processed the better.

3Watch out for hidden stuff – you’ll be amazed at how brands sneak sugar into lots of foods, although if you’re sticking to number 2 this should be less of an issue.

4Balance your macronutrients – ensure you are getting a good balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat.

5Beware “healthy” products – just because it says it’s healthy on the packet, doesn’t mean it is! Again the closer you stick to number 2, the less of an issue this is.
