Widen your point of reference to strengthen your motivation…

This is a slight chicken and egg concept, but motivation is like a muscle and needs to be worked to get stronger. The more reference points you have to strengthen negative thoughts that stop you from working out, eating right and generally taking care of yourself, the better. Mondays are my 400m sprints day, I do them every week, trying to get a little faster each time. This Monday I really, really really didn’t want to go. But bearing in mind, my fellow competitors probably don’t take the same attitude, I forced myself. They were a little slower than normal, but I still did them and felt good afterwards. I could have taken two attitudes to a less than perfect session: 1) There’s no point in training, they were slower, I shouldn’t have bothered, 2) Even though that workout wasn’t as fast as I wanted it to be, I still got a great workout, and most importantly I worked my positive mind muscle to do something I didn’t want to do, which means that next time that happens, it will be easier for me to just do the workout anyway. I took the latter. The more points of reference you have to saying ‘no’ to the negative voice in your head, the easier it gets to do so. Simples.
