Oh pass me my silk eye mask darling, I can’t bear to look!!

Rumour has it, according to scientists in Utah, that us ladies feel panic-stricken at the sight of obesity.  The research, published in the psychological journal Personality and Individual Differences, is part of a long-term project working to improve treatment of eating disorders by tracking progress with brain imaging.  The motivation behind this new study was to establish a point of reference among a control group of women who scored in the healthy range on eating-disorder diagnostic tests, with a healthy attitude towards their bodies, and to then compare those results with those of women with eating disorders.

However the results showed that even FGs, with a healthy attitude towards their bodies, feel panic-stricken when they see overweight people.  Seemingly when women were shown images of obese people it triggered an area in the brain that processes self-reflection and identity.  The study showed that women felt scared of being overweight without consciously thinking about their figure.  They say the results show how women are conditioned to be afraid of being fat because they are constantly bombarded with messages and images of a thin ideal.  Cue magazine circling a celeb’s thigh, with “Guess Who?” on it, followed by the same celeb looking emaciated the following week in the same mag.  No shit Sherlock, you were calling her fat last week when she was a size zero, and now you’re wondering why she’s a size minus two!!!  Yeah, really responsible, thanks!!!!

How do I feel when I see an obese person?  I guess I always think they would feel so much better if they were carrying less weight, they would breathe better, move better and have less health issues.  Am I disgusted by it?  No.  I just hope that somehow, they will be able to turn it around, in their time and that it be their decision.  This extends to how I feel when I see people who are underweight.  Health is my ultimate goal and I feel that carrying no weight is also a big health issue.  Eat well, live well and be yourself!
