Lifting weights? But I don’t want to bulk up!

Come on, sit on mama’s lap, we need to have a little talk. Let’s just go over the rules a little. So whilst you may think that you are working harder because you are sweating harder from cardio, you actually make greater gains from resistance training…yes girls, lifting weights! Why? Because the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, thus the more efficient your body is at burning fat!
We’re not gonna do much finger wagging here, but if I hear one more girl say, “ooh I don’t want to lift weights because I don’t want to get too muscley!” Three words girls, Get Over Yourselves!!
1. Us gals don’t have enough testosterone to bulk up…we’ll leave that to the boys…and even they have to work damn hard to become beefcakes.
2. Long slow cardio can deplete muscles…they’re the things you need to keep your metabolism high, to burn that fat you’re trying to shift.
3. Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue, think muscle tissue ‘small and compact’, and fat tissue ‘soft and bulgey’…it ain’t muscle bulge you need to be worrying about here girls!
4. Forget about low weight and high reps…literally yawning as I type…2 sets of 15-20 reps of piddley weights are not going to banish your bingo wings – I don’t care where you’ve read it, or what friend told you so, this is what mama is telling you, and mama don’t lie!
5. The short-term gainers amongst you might think that you work harder in a cardio session from excess sweat-age etc. but the metabolism boost post-weight-lifting, kicks a 30 minute dabble on the treadmill, swiftly where the sun doesn’t shine. Yes ladies, resistance training can keep your metabolic rate elevated for 48 to 72 hours afterwards. Burn it baby!!
If you’re shy and don’t know where to start in the weights room, get yourself a trainer for a session or two. If you don’t belong to a gym, invest in some weights for home (buy the ones that allow you to interchange the weight plates, cos you’ll be getting stronger sweeties!!)
