Ouch my tushy hurts from working out!!

A literal pain in the butt!!  Welcome to world of DOMS ladies – delayed onset muscle soreness!  It’s the whip that cracks the day after, the day after!!  You wake up the day after a workout and feel pretty good, and then the next day BAM…you can’t walk!!!  For the weak-minded, it is enough to make them say, exercise is not for me, but we’re not like that are we Fit Girls.  Ain’t no amount of pain that can make our buns of steel stop squattin’!!

So what are DOMS and why to we get them?  Well in truth, there are a few little theories that fly around.  Most recently DOMS have been put down to the fact that when you train you get little micro-tears in your muscles.  So essentially your muscles breakdown, and then rebuild.  This whole process ensures that your muscles grow back stronger (think increased metabolism, and a tight butt) except, you have to have the pain bit.  Cue army drill sergeant barking “no pain, no gain!!”

And le dom Madames, is not just for newbies.  Oh no.  It happens to everybody!!  If you train regularly and have a week or two off, you can prepare your little self for some DOM action, ain’t no shame in it!!

The best way to get rid of them is to keep moving unfortunately, increased blood flow to your muscles means reduced time spent with “Ow!” being the only word in your vocabulary.  Try the following for a little relief:

1. Move more, a 20-40 minute cardio session will increase blood flow to the area and speed up recovery.

2. A hot bath, followed by a good stretch.

3. A massage, also to encourage blood flow to the area.
